THE HUMANITY OF CHRIST A. Jesus Was Fully Man 1. Jesus was born into this world as a human: Matthew 1:1 "... Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham" Romans 1:3 "... as to his human nature was a descendant of David" Romans 9:5 "... and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ" 2. Although Jesus was born as other children are born, the Bible makes plain that His conception was different from that of any other child. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a virgin, and Jesus was conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit. (See Luke 1:26-35) This was a fulfilment of the prophecy in Isaiah 7:14 "... the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel." 3. Jesus grew up just as normal children do: Luke 2:40 "And the child grew and became strong ..." Luke 2:52 "Jesus grew in wisdom and stature ..." 4. Jesus was educated at home by his mother, and by his father in the carpenters shop, and although he did not attend the schools of his day (see John 7:15), he became very well educated (see Luke 2:46,47). 5. Jesus had the same physical and emotional characteristics as we do: Matthew 4:2 Jesus needed food John 4:6 He got tired Matthew 8:24 He needed sleep John 19:28 He got thirsty John 11:35 He cried John 11:36 He loved John 11:33,34 He got annoyed Heb. 12:2 He experienced joy & shame Mark 1:13 He was tempted Heb. 2:18 He suffered B. Jesus Was Sinless Jesus was made like us in every way except that he never sinned: 1 Peter 2:22 "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." Hebrews 4:15 "(Jesus) ... has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin." Matthew 4:1-11 In this account of Jesus' temptation by the devil, we see that though he was tempted much more severely than we have been, he did not sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21 "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." C. Why did the Son of God have to become the Son of Man? 1. So that God could understand what it is like to be human: Hebrews 2:17 "he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he ... might make atonement for the sins of the people." Hebrews 4:15 "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin." 2. So that we could understand what God is like: Matthew 1:23 ... they will call him "Immanuel" - which means "God with us". Matthew 11:27 "... no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." John 1:14 "The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." Hebrews 1:3 "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being ..." 3. To save us from our sins: Matthew 1:22 "... you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." Matthew 18:11 "The Son of Man came to save what was lost." 1 Peter 3:18 "For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God..." 4. To show us how to live: John 13:15 "I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
